About Chong Yi Lin

Biography

Chong Yi Lin explores the politics of sentiment through a fusion of nostalgia, symbolism, and daily personal rituals in an attempt to capture the complexities of life, love, and loss. She approaches sentiment through a reconciliation via objects, drawing comfort from their inherent permanence and stability. Working primarily with drawing and textiles, specifically thread embroidery, she favors these materials for their malleability and softness. Through the deliberate back and forth process of her needlework, Chong embeds personal emotions into tangible forms, making the tactile relationship between memory, feeling, and material central to her artistic practice.

Born in 1992 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Chong received her Diploma in Fine Arts from the Dasein Academy of Arts in 2013, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Taipei National University of Arts, Taiwan, in 2019. In 2015, she held her first solo exhibition, Ashes of Time, at Lostgens’ Contemporary Art Space in Kuala Lumpur. She was selected for a three month artist residency at Rimbun Dahan in 2021, culminating in her second solo exhibition, Garden of the Mind, at The Back Room, Kuala Lumpur, which featured works produced during her time at the residency.
